What you get

Letters first. Then words, then short stories.

Start with the vowels and consonants, one small group at a time. See how vowel signs change a letter's sound, then move on to everyday words, numbers, simple sentences and short reading passages, with Akshar the elephant as your guide.

36 short lessons

Ten units, each lesson 5 to 8 minutes: introduction, learn, listen, practice, quiz. Eleven activity types keep the practice varied.

Interactive Barakhadi

Every consonant with all twelve forms, laid out as a grid. Tap any cell to hear it.

Finger tracing

Trace each letter with your finger and get gentle feedback on how much of the letter you covered.

Spaced review

Review sessions bring back the letters and words you are about to forget, so practice goes where it is needed.

Progress you can see

Characters and words learned, streaks, a daily goal and achievements, all on one screen.

The lessons

One small group of letters at a time.

The Learn tab lays out your path unit by unit: Meet Gujarati first, then Swar, the vowels, then the consonants and on to words and passages. Each lesson takes 5 to 8 minutes and moves through introduction, learn, listen, practice and quiz. Later units unlock as you complete the earlier ones.

  • An "Up next" card shows the lesson to start
  • Character library with sounds and examples
  • Progress bar for every unit and across all 36 lessons
  • Clear English explanations, interface also in Gujarati

The Barakhadi

Twelve forms of every letter.

"Barakhadi" comes from "bār", twelve. Every consonant has twelve forms: its built-in "a" plus eleven vowel signs. The grid shows each row with its sound written underneath, ka, kā, ki, kī, so you learn the pattern once and can read every row.

  • Every consonant with all twelve forms
  • Tap any cell to hear it
  • Romanised sound under every letter
  • A Practice Barakhadi drill one tap away

Reading

Tap any word to hear it.

Read short passages sentence by sentence. Every word plays its sound and shows its meaning, and each passage ends with a few questions. Level 1 starts with four-sentence stories such as "My home" and "The cat and the mat", and the levels build from there.

  • Passages and a separate Sentences mode
  • Sentence count, word count and reading time on every card
  • English title and transliteration for each passage
  • A few questions at the end of every passage

For young learners

A simpler mode, the same lessons.

The first screen asks who is learning. Choose a child and the same lessons open in a simpler mode: three big buttons for Learn, Play and Stories, activities led by sound, and stars instead of scores. Settings and the switch to the full app sit behind a grown-ups question.

  • "Who is learning?" on first launch, changeable later
  • Learn, Play and Stories, each one big button away
  • Big buttons and stars, with one shared progress
  • Never uses the microphone
